Common name: Amethyst Passion Flower
Botanical name: Passiflora amethystina    Family: Passifloraceae (Passion flower family)
Synonyms: Passiflora violacea (illeg.), Passiflora onychina, Passiflora cornuta

Amethyst Passion Flower is a vigorous, herbaceous climbing plant with a perennial rootstock producing annual stems that scramble over the ground or support themselves on other plants by means of tendrils. Amethyst Passion Flower is distinctive due to its dense and complex corona of bright amethyst-colored filaments, slightly retroflexed so as to hide the flower, its intense perfume and its graceful posture. Flowers are approximately 6-7 cm across. The trilobate leaves, about 7 x 8 cm, are supported by a leaf-stalk rich in striking thread-like glands, often paired. The petals and sepals are purple violet. The latter, light green in colour on the bottom blade, end with a long, slightly curved spike. The edible fruit is gathered from the wild and eaten locally, though it is not greatly appreciated
